Description

Studio microphone with a retro look. Warm sound, ideal for voice recordings. It uses the capsules of the legendary M 49 and U 47 and has a cardioid polar pattern. The set is rounded off by a flexible hanging frame. The TLM 49* is a large-diaphragm, cardioid studio microphone with a warm sound, designed for recording vocals. It comes with a complementary set of flexible suspensions. Its design is inspired by the iconic microphones of the 1950s, the M 49 and M 50 models. The TLM 49 features Neumann's signature matte nickel finish. The "design" of the sound is also based on that of the M 49 and U 47. Combining a retro look with Neumann's proven transformerless technology, this microphone offers low self-noise and comfortable operation at high volumes.

Applications: In developing this model, the sound was developed through extensive field testing which helped make the TLM 49 ideal for vocal and speech recording. Nevertheless, it is also well suited as an instrument recording microphone for both professional studio productions and demanding home recordings.

Polar pattern: The large-diaphragm capsule of the TLM 49 microphone gives it a cardioid characteristic with a supercardioid tendency thanks to the special capsule design. Using the M49 as an example, the high frequencies are more focused. Capsule size is 34mm. The front panel of the microphone is highlighted with a red company logo. The capsule has a specific direction, so the word "Neumann" is where you look for the front Acoustic properties: The TLM 49 uses the famous K 47 capsule, which was also installed in the M 49 and U 47 microphones and has a linear frequency response up to the upper midrange. Above 2kHz there is a gentle boost in the 3dB range. The capsule is closed in a large head made of metal mesh, acoustically highly tolerant and absolutely sound-neutral.

Technical characteristics: The abbreviation TLM should be expanded to "transformerless microphone". Through the use of TLM technology, the conventional output transformer has been replaced by an electrical circuit. As with conventional transformers, this circuit offers good common mode rejection and prevents HF interference that could affect the balanced audio signal. The hum and noise of the balanced modulation line are effectively suppressed here. The microphone can work with a sound pressure of up to 129 dB without clipping and offers a dynamic range of 117 dB (corresponding to the frequency characteristic A).

Safety of use: The entire internal structure of the microphone has been flexibly suspended, which prevents the generation of noise from the device. In addition, the capsule is suspended in the housing in a shock-absorbing manner. Thanks to the wide frequency response, the TLM 49 microphone allows you to work with extremely low frequencies without changing the nature of the signal. Of course, this means that the microphone is sensitive to noise in this frequency range, for example caused by vibration or wind. However, the TLM 49 is equipped with EA 3, a flexible suspension that prevents the generation of "structural" noise. If the microphone is operated in extremely close proximity to the sound source, PS 15 or PS 20 screens can be used, which, mounted on the front of the microphone, provide impact protection.
